What does Howe rejection tell us?

Eddie Howe has decided he's better off at Dean Court than swapping it all for Selhurst or the Valley. The announcement this afternoon comes after four days of intense speculation and I think it begins to fill in a few blanks in Charlton's new ownership situation.

First, it would appear that the widely held suspicion of the automatic appointment of Dennis Wise was wide of the Mark. Michael Slater's initial statement that Wise was not in the frame looks to have been true and not disingenuous.

Secondly, it does look increasingly like the decision to sack Phil Parkinson was made as a genuine reaction to the appalling performance laid on for the new owners first game. That too would suggest Michael Slater may not have been lying when he said he would sit down with Parky on the Monday and look at transfer needs.

Thirdly, the offer supposedly on the table from Charlton wasn't compelling enough for Howe to pack Bournemouth in. It was also reportedly matched by Palace which would confirm it wasn't silly money. Howe has negotiated a better deal at Bournemouth and he is known to be particularly loyal to Bournemouth, the club he grew up supporting as a boy. He also turned down Peterborough after Darren Ferguson was shown the door, so he's avoided the temptation of more money and, presumably, a bigger budget once before. I admire him for his loyalty. I used to dream as a lad of playing for Charlton and refusing a transfer to Manchester United. Having finally accepted a move because Charlton needed the money, I had it written into my contract that I would never have to play against the Mighty Addicks. Kids eh!

So, our search continues and there appears to be a growing number of clubs prowling for available talent. Jimenez and Slater will want to sort this out quickly and not run the risk of losing another candidate in a Dutch Auction.

  1. I agree with a lot of that Dave. Yep kudos to Howe and Tindall on staying at Dean Court.

I would like to see us approach Exeter now to talk to Tinsdale.

  2. Did we actually offer him the job though? All we know for certain is that Charlton asked permission from Bournemouth to speak to their manager.

I'm wondering whether Howe would have been the right choice anyway. Does he have ambition? He has been linked with several offers away from Bournemouth all from 'bigger' clubs and turned them all down. Is he too cosy in his comfort zone bubble where expectation is fairly low? Has he got the bottle to manage at a higher level, time will tell I suppose!

  3. Good post, to think we could have plaayed in the same CAFC team with similar contractual terms.
I think your prognosis on Howe is just about right, I too sense he has a degree of that lost quality, loyalty, and wouldn't it be enice to think that we may see more of this in due course.
My only fear had been that there was also some concern on his part at the management arrangements on offer ( a La Billy Davies) but I think that's unlikely.
Agreed re the competitive situation we now find ourselves in re selection of a good candidate. My fear now is that we make the wrong appt in desparation. Worst of all would be a sacked windbag of a manager best suited to sit alongside that other windbag Hansen in the studio.

  4. Essex Al - even if we didn't offer him the job (and I am sure we did), the fact that we approached him confirms all of those other things e.g. Wise was never a done deal and Parky's sacking wasn't necessarily pre-meditated.

  5. Mike - you make an interesting point about Howe's possible concerns over our new owners. Chicago Addick posted on this recently. Whether there was anything he didn't like about them personally or the manner of their offer, the fact that they sacked the incumbent with Charlton lying in fifth won't have gone unnoticed. Expectations are obviously high and anyone taking the position will have to be very confident of their own ability or desperate for a job. Perhaps Howe was concerned he might not make the immediate impact necessary, although it does look like he never really wanted to leave his home-town club.
