Andy Murray has been threatening to take a stranglehold on world tennis for a couple of years now. One-by-one he has managed to get the measure of the best players and I, for one, am convinced that he will be a Wimbledon winner at some point in his career. He has stepped up his game so far this year on clay courts and is now playing in the semi's on grass at Queens in preparation for SW19. You can still get 5-1 on the surly Scot to win Wimbledon but that may shorten if he wins at Queens.
And he has a good chance this afternoon against James Blake...who won when Andy Roddick pulled out with an ankle injury. Not that I think that would've stopped the Scot either.
ReplyDeleteHe's definitely been getting better through this week...yes, I have been home watching!
He's beaten both those ranked above him...not just scraped, but well beaten...I think he has a good chance at Wimbledon and/or the US Open.
And he had a good convincing win...though bouyed for Wimbledon, he's trying to play down the newspaper hype...
ReplyDeleteSuze - if Nadal's knees knock him out of Wimbledon, then the draw might be wide open for Murray. Federer played brilliantly to win the French but he also took his chance there with no Nadal to face in the final. Murray also seems to have discovered how to beat Federer. His biggest problem could be complacency against someone from way down the rankings.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure he's looking over his shoulder too...those players who'll play the game of their life just to beat him. He's one of the "big boys" now, and to there to be knocked off his perch....something we know all about.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Nadal would have played this year if he hadn't been defending champion...he said his knees need rest, and he's got a lot of points to defend. Federer wants "his" title back...but, he got some lucky breaks in Paris. No warm up tournament for either? Federer's played Halle before, and Nadal Queens. We'll see...
(Nadal is playing an exhibition game only)
