Millwall 2 v Charlton Athletic 1

Good Friday. The day we remember the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The roots of 'good' are lost but whatever your religious persuasion, we can forget about positivity today or the triumph of justice.

Alcohol still courses through the veins. The blood is still hot and adrenaline is high. Top of the form table Charlton Athletic slumped to defeat to bottom of the form table Millwall in, yet another, cruel surrender. We can blame the harsh-looking sending off of Chris Solly but to take the lead with ten men and 23 minutes remaining and blow it against an inept Millwall side is unforgivable or par-for-the-course depending on your point-of-view.

The hard facts are Millwall needed the points and we are safe but the analysis suggests another Charlton derby performance where we lacked ambition and bottle. Guy Luzon joins the long list of derby failures and so do most of this side. Henderson was man-of-the-match - that tells you all you need to know - and the rest were also rans.

Hopefully they will go down and we will be excused this two-match aberration for a few years to come.

  1. A poor Charlton side outfought for nearly the whole game can have no complaints

  2. Unless you're brand new to Charlton and not a student of history, you go to this game with low expectations. Sure enough, fate helped a poor opposing team this time in the form of the red card, and even then it took them another 50mins to score when we were knackered.

Having said that, we got no midfield ball and the many Buyens-knockers might want to think about that. His distribution may be in need of improvement but he does a breaking-up job, and it didn't happen yesterday.

  3. Geoff - you're right, we lost the midfield and Cousins had a stinker.34% possession and 7 efforts versus their 24. Par for the course, I suppose, in this fixture.

  4. Yes, no surprise. Definitely missed Buyens yesterday. From 10/3/79 and a 2-4 home defeat to yesterday... My total record against Millwall at The Valley, Selhurst, the Den, Upton Park and the New Den P20 W2 D10 L8 F18 (4 were in one game) A29.

  5. So depressing year after year losing to this mob who always beat us but finish below us. I could point to Buyens, Bulot and Ben Haim being missing but we still had enough "talent" to beat them. Solly was unlucky in my view but he did get a silly booking shortly before the sending off. We didn't want it as much as them.........how many times have I heard/said that?
