Predictable 3-0 defeat at Turf Moor this afternoon. A 4-3-3 line-up excluding Johnnie Jackson and Yann Kermogant was rolled over by a first half goal by Danny Ings and second-half double from Sam Vokes.
We have two home games this week which may prove significant in Chris Powell's management career. Nottingham Forest will come looking for the points on Tuesday and if we lose that, failure to beat Blackpool on Saturday might force Jiminez's hand. My guess is that he is under significant financial pressure as he tries to sell the club with it's attendant and growing debt, not to mention the obvious playing problems and contractual uncertainty for most of the squad.
Powell is clearly struggling at the moment but there are some obvious mitigations. He has not been allowed to strengthen the squad, despite hanging on to some saleable players. The working atmosphere in the club has evidentially suffered as further employees have been sacked and others have taken the owners to court. That situation continues and we also have the playing staff contractual situation, which has the majority facing the prospect of fresh challenges next Summer. It can't be helping that out of 16 or 17, I think only Solly and Pope have had extensions agreed so far.
Patience amongst the Addick faithful is also being tested. The latest sickening surrender at home to Smallwall has cut interest levels to rock bottom and with three effective home defeats from four so far (including Doncaster), one or two more this week could be too much for most. Coming on the back of the dross season ticket holder were served for two-thirds of last season, we have to be looking for four points this week or I can see straws breaking camel's backs.

Going to my third game of the season on Tuesday I will be watching it through my fingers. Very uncomfortable at the moment . I hate to see where we are , we don't have a good enough squad no investment , make no bones about it this is a bloody relegation battle only 8 games in . So nothing new there for older fans as Lenny Lawrence used to say the first game of the season is to be played a as if we are about to go down .. We used to be called battling Charlton . Come on you reds ....
ReplyDeleteDunno if I am the only one, but having bought tickets for the Forest game I was tempted to give the Blackpool match a miss and go see Welling next Saturday instead against Edgar Davids' Blackpool. But then my father in law who is 50% Charlton, 50% Millwall because of family history persuaded me to go see Blackpool game so bought tickets for that as well. Was a season ticket holder last season and hope to be one next season as well but not if it's back against the likes of Stevenage and Walsall. Just looked at Fuller last night on Sky versus Huddersfield. All Chrissie Powell needed was some money for consolidation - Obika and Fuller for a start, but he didn't even get that decency afforded to him. Shit management from above - they need to wake up before we're all spending Saturdays at Welling or home in our armchairs in front of Sky. That said, if we take 4 points this week all could change. If we play like we did against Leicester there is no way we should be in our current predicament.
ReplyDeleteAnon - think you mean Welling play Barnet on Saturday. It's an attractive fixture and one I would fancy myself if my season ticket wasn't in action. Obviously, there has been little or no investment but it's c;ear we are skint and we should be grateful that they have managed not to sell Solly and/or Kermogant. I'm not so sure we won't have our hands forced in january because of increasing debt and no buyers. It really does look like we may end up being forced into Administration before any of the prospective buyers come in due to the debt commitments to `directors and previous Directors. Jiminez is fast turning into Mark Hulyer.
