The best side since the war?

I recently acquired this signed Charlton shirt from the 2003-04 season from one of Henry Irving's selfless fundraisers on Charlton Life.  I am very impressed with the job the framer (Gallery on the Heath) has done. It was the season we finished 7th in the Premiership and boasted the likes of Dean Kiely, Herman Hreidarsson, Mark Fish, Richard Rufus, Luke Young, Scott Parker, Paolo Di Canio, Claus Jenson, Matt Holland, Sean Bartlett, Jonaton Johansson and Mathias Svensson. In terms of our finish, it was the best in my lifetime and looking through that list you have to wonder if it was our best side ever given the increasingly competitiveness and professionalism of the game?

  2. Having one from the previous season, how many of the signatures can you decipher?

  3. The thing about that side, although there were some decent players, there were also a number that were 'Steady Eddie's' that Curbs just managed to get the best out of.

  4. Stevie - when haven't we had a few mediocre players?

  5. I guess we've always had some, but what I was really trying to say is that we can all pick out the top players we've had. But, we should also remember the grafters.

The players that despite their lack of quality, put in a great shift every single week. The ones that chased every ball, threw their bodies in the way and never gave up.

These people have given as much to our Club as all the top quality players we have had, sometimes more. I'm just trying to make sure we don't forget those guys :)
