One out of two

Aint bad. I predicted  a Charlton-Scotland lose double this weekend, so take some comfort for the fact that we snatched a win at Southend in added time. If I had to choose, then three points would have been my pick as it keeps us in the race and Scotland were already out of the 6 Nations hunt.

I have been catching up on the Southend game and it was another uninspiring performance by all accounts and one we can probably count ourselves fortunate to win. The fact that a struggling Shrimpers side played for over an hour with ten men makes the win all the less impressive, but with only a dozen games remaining, it's just a case of winning as many as possible in whatever fashion to force our season into extra time.

Scotland's disappointing showing in Italy will have hurt Andy Robinson more than the bitter loss in Cardiff a fortnight ago. We looked like we were set to finish the Italians off having gone 12-9 in front but we couldn't get a try and had two held-up on the line. When the Italians broke through to score one of their own, it was all over. We now face the prospect of a clean sweep of five defeats for the Wooden Spoon. Only a win over the Auld Enemy at Murrayfield might save us, although it could cost Martin Johnson his job, which would probably cause Andy Robinson a wry smile. Trouble is, it doesn't look likely when confidence is so low. You know the feeling?
